About a year ago, the Creative
Director of a large shop in Virginia Beach phoned me with
a proposition. He explained that there is a fellow who's
been voicing TV & Radio spots for a multi-statewide
furniture chain called Haynes for years. Haynes has
used this fellow over and over again because he
has a unique style.
Anyway, the voiceover guy's
name is John H-------. The Creative Director of
this large agency then says "Bob, look...I want
you to rip off H-------'s voice....bigtime. I know you
"do" H-------, do you have a problem with
Well, being the "voicewhore"
that I am, I said "...when do we start?"
So for the next six months,
the Hampton Roads TV and Radio market was saturated with
Bob Jump doing John H------- for Freedom Automotive.
You could not escape this voice. It was everywhere. In fact,
people were getting it in the fillings of their teeth.
So much so, that one day, one
of the "creatives" working with Haynes (Haynes
being the store that had the original John H-----------
voice in the first place)
called a local recording studio and asked them if they
could find "the guy who's been doing all of the Freedom
Automotive stuff for the last six months." The
recording studio said "Find him? Hell, Bob Jump's on
our talent roster! Why do you ask?" The reply was
"Are you kidding? He's gonna be our new voice for
Tell me that this kind of
story isn't what goes on daily in this industry. Ya gotta
laugh. And that's why I love this business!
Jump has been in the Voiceover / Production business
since 1977. Before retiring to start bobjump.com a few years
ago, he was President, Partner and General Manager
of Studio Center Corporation. During his 25 years there, Bob
started as a producer/director and helped grow the
business to a 175 member talent roster with locations in
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Memphis and Las Vegas. Only in the
last five years there, did Bob seriously put mind, body and
soul into focusing on his voiceover work. Being on
the "other side of the glass" Bob is just now
learning the voiceover business from a much different
perspective. Today, Jump lives with his beautiful wife,
Barbara and surfer son, Jonathan, and works from his studio
and office on the third floor of his home in Norfolk,
Virginia. Some of his clients include Smucker's, LL Bean,
Brach's Candies and Popeye's Chicken.
